The Poppy House was originally constructed in 1934. Built with local stone, the foundation and beautiful rock retaining walls express craftmanship of a bygone era. One of the most interesting features of the home is that it is built "around" a 200 year old oak tree. This massive oak provides filtered sunlight within the home.
Over the next 40 years, the Poppy House was transformed into the larger structure that you see today.
In 2006, the Poppy House was purchased by a local architect who wanted to see the home returned to its original bungalow style. He tore down about 70% of the structure, being careful to retain the historic elements of the structure. Over the years, previous owners had added several uncomplimentary contemporary design elements; most of these elements were removed.
The interior of the house has been totally renovated. All electrical and plumbing were brought up to date. The two bedrooms and two baths have been entirely rebulit. New appliances and fixtures are found throughout the home. Imported black slate from Brazil is generously used throughout both bathrooms and the living room.
The kitchen was redesigned as a chef friendly space. A large butcher block table is in the center of all new cabinetry, and a convection oven and over-head microwave.
A large walk-in closet was designed and installed by California Closets. Black granite bathroom vanities accentuate the top off new white contemporary bathroom fixtures.
The cottage features vaulted whitewashed ceilings, brightly colored walls and massive wood beams throughout the cozy home. This open floor plan works well for a full time residence. Large windows allow views of mountains and the Hot Springs Creek.
The house is served by natural spring water, and also has a certified septic tank.
This home is located within the Cleveland National Forest. The United States Department of Agriculture owns the land the house is located upon; with the owner being granted a 20 year use permit. The permits have been granted since 1950, and the Forest Service states there is no reason for the permits not to be granted into the future. The Poppy House was just granted it's next 20 year permit, good until 2029! The owner pays a nominal Use Permit fee annually to maintain the permit in good standing. And we have great canyon neighbors.
The owner of this home enjoys the use of approximately 1 acre of land surrounding the structure. The owner also has retained an easement from the County of Orange to use over 1 acre of Caspers Regional Park (the home borders on both Park and Forest boundaries) for various infrastructure use (water, electric, television, internet).
